This page is a brief glance at the events that have led up to the modern-day Cities, and events that come after.
“Halcyon” Age
In a world not too far removed from our own, civilization has gathered in a large peace board of nations in preperation to conquer space. They began developing consumer-grade space flight technology, and the spread of humanity outside their mother system became but a certainty.
During this Halcyon age, Oneirum was discovered. Old world scholars are unsure of its exact origin, but the effects it had on the development of technology were cascading. Applied artificial intelligence had stagnated, but using Oneirum as a means of storing information allowed them to surface as helper bots, some with more specialized functions.
Oneirum Age
Even before the Storm, Oneirum was a complicated and dangerous substance to contain. It was not to be taken lightly, yet often it was misused. The first effects of Storm Disease were observed during this time.
During this time, Oneirum began slipping slowly into daily, consumer use, making tasks easier and constantly putting users at risk. The benefits of ignoring the laws of thermodynamics never grew any less appealling, making the risk look subtle and inconsequential. At this point, Oneirum use had spread across the globe, and even into the developing stellar settlements hanging off-planet.
The Cataclysm
The general theory is that a ground zero had catalyzed the conditions necessary to draw Oneirum together. It could have been as simple as a momentary breach of containment, a simple power outage might have done it, but it started a chain reaction that rippled across the surface, drawing Oneirum into the sky where it accumulated into a mass known as the Storm.
It is generally agreed by historians and Librarians that the Cataclysm did not just create the storm, it distorted and disturbed the realities in localized areas, shifting and demolishing structures, forming new terrain, and being a very bad influence on the composition of living things.
The Cataclysm occured 50 years ago as of present day.
